Contemporary calf worn at front edge, Recently rebacked in sympathetic veg-dyed calf. Corners consolidated and boards restored in contemporary calf, Period contrasting spine label. Contrasting leather head-and tailbands. Previous owner's signature, date and flourished doodle to front free endpaper: "Acheph par Gaultier, le 12 Septembre 1681" in neat pen. (Probably means "completed" (reading the book?) by Gaultier on that date) Foxing and staining to some pages, but none to obscure. Some marginal tears repaired; a number of other short tears still present. Publisher-printed sidenotes in margins. Translated into French by F.S. Dalquie, after having been issued first in Latin, then Dutch, English and finally, French. Trans. from the Latin by F.S. Dalquié. With 25 copper-engraved plates incl. frontis & pictorial title-page; 2 folding copper-engraved maps in good condition; 65 copper engravings in the text, most half-page but a few quarter-page. Some of the illustrations are haunting and mystically reverberating, something one might encounter in an ancient work of esoteric magic. "The illustrations of plants and animals are based on Michel Boym's Flora Sinensis and some of the images are derived from Chinese originals...Although Kircher himself did not create most of the images, he chose them wisely in order to elucidate the descriptions found in the text..."
