King, Samuel Ward, John Tyler, & John Whipple
By His Excellency, Samuel Ward King, Governor, Captain, General, and Commander-in-Chief of the State of Rhode-Island and Providence Plantations. A proclamation. Whereas I have this day received from His Excellency John Tyler, President of the United States, a communication touching the political affairs of this state..
[Providence: publisher not identified, 1842. Folio broadside (approx. 19½" x 11½"), text in triple column, wood-engraved vignette of the R.I. State seal at the top of the first column; mild dampstain central, but in all, very good. Also with the texts of "To His Excellency the Governor of Rhode Island ... John Tyler. Washington, April 11, 1842," which promised that American troops would support Rhode Island's regular government against insurgent Dorrites; and a "Letter from Mr. Whipple. To His Excellency Samuel W. King ... John Whipple, for the committee," which warned that, if the Dorrites succeeded, "the same sure law of force will inevitably prostrate every State Government in the Union." In this edition Whipple's letter begins at the top of the third column. In another edition the letter begins at the foot of the second column, and line endings vary. Who knows how many in OCLC? Certainly Brown and Providence Public but there's confusion over the varying issues. American Imprints 4273 (a generic entry); not in Bartlett; not in Sabin. DeSimone & Schofield 27 note a total of 14 copies (R.I. Historical, Brown, and Newport Historical accounting for 13 of them - likely retained remainders).
