Two octavo volumes (8 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches; 209 x 133 mm.). Bound ca. 1910 by Root & Son of London (stamp-signed on front turn-ins) in full dark green morocco. Covers decoratively bordered in gilt, spines with five raised bands elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, green silk liners and end leaves, all edges gilt. Headcap of volume one expertly and almost invisibly repaired. Collating xii, 475, [1, blank]; viii, 480. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Lord Macaulay in volume II. Extra-illustrated by the insertion of sixty-eight fine engraved (mainly nineteenth century) portraits, many of which are inlaid to size, including thirty-seven with hand-coloring. In addition there are nine nineteenth century engraved views. A very Fine copy. Thomas Babington Macaulay, 1st Baron Macaulay, PC (1800-1859) was a British historian and Whig politician. He wrote extensively as an essayist and reviewer. His books on British history have been hailed as literary masterpieces. He was a member of the Babington family by virtue of his aunt's marriage to Thomas Babington. Here, his writings are brought together by Sir George Otto Trevelyan, 2nd Baronet OM PC (1838-1928), a British statesman and author. Trevelyan published this work about his maternal uncle in 1876.
