This unusual and quite striking Second World War press photograph captures a triptych of images of Churchill delivering his "Do your worst – and we will do our best" speech of 14 July 1941. This speech was delivered at a luncheon by the London County Council at the County Hall after the review of the Civil Defence Services in Hyde Park. The three images encapsulate the range of Churchill’s oratory, his face mirthful in the left image, his right arm upraised and his countenance serious in the middle image, and in the third and final image his expression severe, his hands tucked beneath his jacket labels. That third and final posture preceded Churchill’s delivery of the signature line of his speech.The gelatin silver print on matte photo paper measures 11.2 x 8.1 inches (28.4 x 20.6 cm). Condition is good. The three images of Churchill remain clear and distinct, despite light wear to extremities and a small loss to a blank portion of the lower left corner. In preparation for publication, each image was augmented by the newspaper’s art department with crop marks, painting of the background to further isolate Churchill, and numbers at the bottom of each image. There is pencil notation in the upper blank margin and a printed caption in the lower blank margin that reads "LONDON – CHURCHILL SPEAKS – British Prime Minister Winston Churchill displayed this variety of expressions and gesture during the course of a recent luncheon address."
