John Coffee Hays / Lien for the California Exchange Building Signed by Sheriff
1851. Lien for the California Exchange Building Signed by Sheriff Hays John Coffee Hays. Very Good. 1851. Ephemera. ALS by John Coffee Hays, here signed as "Col. J. Hays" and also signed by Franklin Runman(?). ALS is written on blue paper and measures 8" x 6 -3/4". Very good with mailing folds and moderate creasing and soiling. The letter is dated San Francisco, Feb. 25, 1851 and reads "Dear Sir, You will please take notice that I have a lieu against the California Exchange for upwards of thirty thousand $30,000.00 and that I expect said building will be sold subject to said lien - Col. J. Hays Sheriff." And then "Yours very respectfully, Franklin Runman(?)." It seems that Hays wrote the letter (all in the same hand) and Franklin Runman signed it.
