[Photo Album]: Cross Country Travel
Ohio, Illinois, South Dakota, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, California: 1939-1940. Near Fine. Hardcover. Oblong folio. Measuring 15" x 11". String-tied black cloth over stiff paper boards with "Photographs" stamped on the front board. Contains 273 gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2.75" x 4.5" and 3.5" x 6", with captions. Near fine photo album with slight edgewear and fine photographs. An extensive album of over a year of travel between 1939 and 1940 detailing a couple's trips across the United States beginning in Ohio. The majority of the album contains original photographs with an additional 111 souvenir commercial images interspersed throughout. The couple had apartments in San Francisco and Los Angeles at different parts of the album and may have been in Ohio visiting friends and took the road trip to get back to California. Many of the pages include long captions detailing the trip and interesting facts from the places they visited. After Ohio the couple headed to Chicago, photographing Michigan Avenue, the Port of Chicago, and the Chicago Historical Society Museum. They then traveled to South Dakota visiting Sioux Falls, Rapid City, and Kadoga. By September they had made their way to the Badlands and took beautiful landscape photographs of the area. Photos from the Black Hills show buffalo, Mount Rushmore, and the graves of "Wild Bill" Hickok and Calamity Jane.
