[Photo album]: Steamboat Excursion of the Boston Railroad Club to the Bay of Naples, Maine 1899
Gilson Adjustable Album, 1899. Very Good. Hardcover. Oblong small folio. String-tied cloth over boards with "Photographs" in gilt on front board. Contains 32 larger format gelatin silver images, each one is 8.5" x 6.5" and each is captioned underneath in ink. Small stain on front board, a little dust soil on the first and last image image and a bit of silvering in the margins of some images, but overall very good or better. Beautifully composed images of an excursion on August 6, 1899 of a group of well-healed older gentlemen identified as the Boston Railroad Club. The first third of the album begins with an image of a steamboat docked at Sebago Lake Station, Maine, then documents various scenes along the route: with various images of the Songo River: the mouth of the river, various turns, a few images along the Songo Lock, pictures of the steamer in the Lock and of it approaching the drawbridge. Probably the majority of the images are devoted to approaching and the land and waterscapes around the Bay of Naples and the Bay of Naples Inn, with images of the Bay and its surroundings, several with scenes of small rowboats or canoes, dockside images, etc., with the last few images of the return trip. The final image, captioned "The Finish" shows a long line of men and a few women trudging towards an awaiting train. A thoroughly pleasing album with well-composed and rich images. We could find virtually nothing about the Boston Rail Road Club, despite several minutes of desultory Googling.
