Sir John F. W. Herschel
ROSS EXPEDITION 1839-43 REVISED INSTRUCTIONS TO THE ANTARCTIC MANUALS VERY RARE
London: Richard and John E. Taylor, 1842. * * * Herschel's Revised Instructions to the Antarctic Manuals, "of the utmost rarity" * * * REVISED INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE USE OF THE MAGNETIC AND METEOROLOGICAL SURVEYS, PREPARED BY THE COMMITTEE OF PHYSICS AND METEOROLOGY OF THE ROYAL SOCIETY. APPROVED BY THE PRESIDENT AND COUNCIL. By Sir John Frederick William Herschel First Edition Printed in London by Richard and John E. Taylor, Red Lion Court, Fleet Street, 1842. This obscure, extremely rare pamphlet was the last in a series of publications prepared by the Royal Society's Committee of Physics and Meteorology. It amends the Antarctic Manuals of 1840 used by the British Antarctic Expedition, 1839-43, under Capt. James Clark Ross. The Manuals (aka Reports) and the Revised Instructions to them were strictly for the use of scientists at the magnetic observatories aboard H.M. Ships Erebus and Terror, and the observatories established on Van Diemen's Land (Hobart, Tasmania), Cape of Good Hope, St. Helena, and elsewhere. The initials "J.F.W.H" printed on the last page identify the author of this pamphlet as the astronomer Sir John Frederick William Herschel. Extremely rare. OCLC WorldCat locates only 5 copies held by member libraries worldwide---one in the Netherlands, one in Paris, and three in Germany. The copy in the Universitatsbibliothek Munchen in Munchen, Germany, is viewable online. Compare this copy with the one being offered here. It will be seen that this copy is superior. Contents * Original 47-page pamphlet with Title Page, many tables, and algebraic equations throughout. … [Click Below for Full Description]
