A very fresh copy of the desirable "Autograph Edition" of Byrd's memoir, chronicling his expedition to Antarctica, his flight to the North Pole, and his flight across the Atlantic. Limited Issue, one of 500 numbered copies specially bound, signed by the author and publishers, with a sample of the cloth from one of the wings of Commander Byrd's plane mounted to front pastedown (this is copy no.449). Octavo (25cm); denim blue paper and navy blue vertically-ribbed cloth, with titling and rule stamped in gilt on spine and covers; xvi,348pp, with 58 illustrations and fold-out map at rear. A fresh, fine copy, but lacking the original glassine and publisher's card slipcase. Bookplate of Richmond book collector Frank G. Christian inside front cover; also laid in is a folded color reproduction of N.C. Wyeth's mural commemorating Byrd's flight, issued by the National Geograhic Society in 1928.
