JAPAN - CUSTOMS 1800 - SANTO KYODEN.
Kotto Shu. 骨董集. Curios (Origins and Changes of Customs around 1800)
Ca. 1813- 1814. Utagawa Toyohiro (illus). THREE VOLUMES IN FOUR. Black and white woodblock illustrations throughout, 10 x 7 inches (26 x 18cm), Japanese four whole stab binding, card binding with title labels. Some insect damage throughout, mostly minor but with one more significant area to the first volume with some very minor loss of text. This is a later 19th century edition with the original woodblock illustrations. An important work describing the origins and history of the customs of the Edo period in Japan by the Japanese writer Santo Kyoden. It is one of the masterpieces of his essay writing. The many illustrations are bold and painterly. Fascinating documentation of the pre-modern period in Japan.
