Kenneth Cook
Wake In Fright • Kenneth Cook • First US Edition First Printing • VG+/VG+
Saint martins press, 1962. Awesome condition with some light toning to jacket. Very rare. Wake in Fright by Kenneth Cook. First US Edition & First printing. Wake in Fright is an awesomely haunting novel about a school teacher (John Grant) assigned to work a 2 year post in the Outback town of Tiboonda, New South Wales. While on holiday, he gets mixed up with the wrong crowd on a brief stay over on his way to Sydney, in the rundown mining town of Bundanyabba or what the locals refer to as, "The Yabba." After losing all his money in an illegal gambling hall, Grant slides further into his moral decline until the ultimate events conclude his stay in the Yabba... you must read to find out the end!! It is the Australian author, film-maker and journalist Cook's first Novel. It was made into an Australia indie movie in 1971 (considered by some to be the greatest Australian movie ever made) and in 2017 was turned into a television mini-series. This book in both US & the U.K. first editions is quite scarce. This copy features a Near Fine book with only the tiniest bump to top corner, else fine with ultra clean interior, no writing, no lean, no bent pages or marks and tight uncanted binding & beautiful publishers black top stain. The even scarcer dust jacket is complete, NOT price clipped & in VG+ condition with slight toning to spine and a few tiny chips. I am not sure how many copies were printed in this first run, or if there was a second printing at all. It is quite hard to come by indeed & they rarely come up for purchase!!
