VANINA, Charles
[Photo Album]: A World War I Soldiers Photo Album of his Adventures from Before he Entered the War, 1916 to 1918
Oakland, California: 1916-1918. Very Good. Hardcover. Oblong quarto measuring 11.5" x 7". String-tied black leather over stiff paper boards. Contains 161 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 2.5" x 1.5" and 6" x 3.5" with some captions. The album focuses on one of the young men, Charles Vanina, as he is seen in most of the photos wearing a huge grin sometimes arm in arm with his girlfriend, Olympia Elaine Goodman. The last few pages are of the young couple out in the country on a farm. Also included are a few small newspaper clippings, one of which is titled, "Airman Tells Life in Italy" which includes accounts from U.S. Airman living in Italy during World War I. The Airman is Clarence M. Smith who went to Oakland's Polytechnic College of Engineering and talks about passing his first flying brevet. Other clippings reference the college's engineering club winning competitions and several clippings about Vanina going off to war in the Engineer Corps. Vanina was the Assistant City Building Inspector … [Click Below for Full Description]
