Charles Dickens
1845. For sale is an exceptionally rare and important Twelfth Edition of arguably the finest work of fiction of the C19th: A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens. Published by Chapman and Hall, 186 Strand, London, 1845. 166p.p., plus the publisher's double-sided advertisement leaf. The twelfth edition is notable also because it marked Dickens's return to the publisher, Chapman and Hall. Together with this, and making up the complete set of Dickens' Christmas books, are: The Chimes; first edition, second state, 1845 The Cricket on the Hearth; first edition, second state, 1845 The Battle of Life: first edition, fourth state, 1846 The Haunted Man; first edition, first state, 1848 Bound in the publisher's original red cloth, with stamping in blind to the boards, and in gilt to the spine and upper board. Original yellow-coated endpapers, and all page edges gilt. Externally they remain in pleasing order indeed, with the cloth brighter than often encountered. Bindings which are, in general, prone to damage, these example is in really very sound order, which makes the set the more desirable. A little extraneous rubbing and a slight 'lean' to the spines. The odd chip and small loss. Internally broadly bright, but with the marking to the pages which is often associated with these titles. Overall, this is an opportunity to own a cornerstone of English literature, and one not to be missed. Boasting truly outstanding publisher's bindings, and in such pleasing condition, this set comes very highly recommended indeed.
