The text was written by the French cartographer and engineer Alain Manesson Mallet (1630-1706) and dedicated to the French King Louis XIV. The illustrations show numerous fortification plans of cities in many different lands, but also firearms, artillery, other weapons, armor, barracks, the manufacturing of arms and ammunition, troop maneuvers, and more.
