1957. Used with wear and tear. Allen and Unwin. 1956, 56, 55 impressions 5,4,2. A lovely first edition set, though wear to the dust jackets especially spines, still, above average condition jackets and books for the age. These early impressions are increasingly hard to find without much more wear and tear, especially to the dust jackets. You can tell the books and jackets have been kept together by the uniform wearing and aging patterns. Now an extremely rare set with no restoration. We feel these early editions are more authentic as-is, with warts and all. Tattering and paper loss to jacket spine ends and corners, darkening to the spines, with lighter color spots (see photos. This darkening is from exposure of light and damp to the spines as the covers are protected when on a shelf. FotR is 1956 5th impression has a 6th impression dust jacket. TT is a 4th impression with 3rd jacket (It was normal practice for the publisher to spare dust jackets, earlier and later). There are a few minor spots to the book covers, spine gilt bright. RotK has foxing to the front end pages. There is no serious flaws to mention on any of the books. Though the jackets have more wear and tears than other early printings I've sold, they are complete and present well in the Mylar as per the photos. As early firsts are becoming so scarce, in any condition, buy these while they are available. Autumn of 1957 was the first time you could buy all three titles together, with the first ever produced slipcase.
