London, Maggs Brothers, 1927-1932. 2 volumes, quarto, pagination; xviii, 237, [3]; VII, [1], 255, [1], with facsimile title pages throughout in text, some printed in red, uncut in original buckram backed boards, with torn and in places chipped dust-wrappers, volume one water stained to the dust wrapper, and very slightly to the lower board, else in very good state throughout, FIRST EDITIONS OF EACH VOLUME, EACH LIMITED AND WITH SPECIAL PROVENANCE. Volume one of this made up set [as all sets must be given the divergence of date and the fact that Maggs sold them separately], is NO 1 of 250 copies, in fact the author's own copy, with his sepia etched 'A L S' bookplate at the front, a later bookplate of P A H Muschamp facing it. Volume 2 is NO 87 of 275 copies, inscribed on the front endpaper 'For Mrs Julia P Hindley Andre L Simon August 1948. ' The recipient was the gastro historian Julia Hindley; other presentation copies from Simon have come on the market so they were evidently friends. Remarkable provenance for a set of considerable rarity. The dust-wrappers could perhaps be restored somewhat. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]
