J S Virtue & Co., London, 1800. Magnificent antique two volume book set of the works of William Shakespeare published in the late 1800's by J S Virtue & Co., London. This unique and beautiful set is entitled "The Works of Shakspere" with additional notes by Charles Knight. Considered to be a great compilation of Shakespeare's works. Vol. I contains over 800 pages and Vol. II over 777 and includes a very nicely detailed 187 page biography. A wonderful presentation of plays, comedies, tragedies, histories and notes of Shakespeare's literary genius and inspirational works of art.These large volumes include extraordinary historical and biographical information enhanced by over 40 exquisite plates ("illustrations on steel"). The illustrations include a portrait of Shakespeare in the frontispiece and his "BIRTH - PLACE" in Vignette, Volume I. The two volumes each measure approximately 11 1/2" x 15" x 3" each. Bound in the original dark-brown leather with maroon cloth, gilt and 5 raised bands on the spines with beautifully marbled endpapers. Considering the age of well over 100 years old, the two volumes are in overall excellent condition. The two volume covers are secure with pages and bindings intact. Of course there is some edge, corner and surface wear due to age. As with most antique books, some foxing is present with engraving of the plates sharp.
