Quarto, unpaginated. 110 quatrains, printed on the recto of each leaf. Text reprinted from Fitzgerald's second edition. With 20 chromolithographic plates, including the frontispiece, by Edmund Dulac; each with a tissue guard. In contemporary full tree calf, with raised bands, gilt titles to spine gilt decoration. All page edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Some rubbing and darkening to spine, with some loss to the spine tip otherwise very good indeed. One plate with a corner folded see photos, some foxing throughout. Omar Khayyam was an astronomer and a poet in Persia, born at Naishapur in Khorassan in the middle of the eleventh century. The French artist Dulac, along with contemporaries Arthur Rackham, Kay Nielsen, Harry Clarke and Warwick Goble was a highly regarded book illustrator, noted for his fantasy drawing, prominent during the so called "Golden Age of Illustration" (the first quarter or so of the twentieth century). His other works include The Arabian Nights, Treasure Island, Andersen's Fairy Tales, and works by Shakespeare, Bronte, Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Approximately 10 ¾ inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition gilt titles, 5 raised gilt bands dividing 6 gilt decorated compartments, gilt lines to top and tail, slightly faded in colour, rubbed with loss to the top of the spine.
