Rarely dated example. Beautifully detailed, haunting illustrations and accent throughout by W. L. Taylor; drawn and engraved under the supervision of George T. Andrew. Pictorial textured boards, light shelf wear, rub; rare without chip. Cover depicts the raven perched upon titled scroll w/limbs and window in b.g.; back board w/lit candle in lamp. Smooth coated, heavy stock leaves near fine, clean. Very small antiquarian inscription at front endpaper: "Valerie Kapp from Mary Kusian, Christmas, 1892". String-bind fine; hinges intact. Complete near fine example w/sharp interior of this rare edition and cover art. From the Press of J. J. Little & Co., No. 10-20 Astor Place, New York. 6 1/2" x 8 1/4" dimensions. Insured post. Edgar Allan Poe's hazy narrative begins on a night in December when "The Raven" haunts the unnamed narrator who sits reading "forgotten lore" to sublimate the loss of his love, Lenore. A "rapping at his chamber door" reveals nothing, yet excites his soul to "burning". A similar rapping, slightly louder, is heard at his window. When he investigates, a raven enters his chamber. Paying no attention, the raven perches atop a bust of Pallas high above the door. Amused by the raven's comically serious disposition, the man asks that the bird tell him its name.
