London: Printed for H.R. Young, 1819. Contemporary boards and a more recent spine; the boards heavily rubbed, scratched and worn. Folio 13 inches tall, 10 inches wide and 2 and ¼ inches thick. Two volumes in one. Illustrated title, Title, Dedication leaf to George III, Preface, xiv, (lacking plate list), 306; Plate No. 21, Second illustrated title, Title to Vol II, (4), 239, blank, (11, index) pp. Second edition (following the 1807 double-folio original and two earlier 4to reprints). Illustrated with 40 hand-coloured plates from drawings by Howitt, etched by J Clark and all dated 1807. Extra-engraved titles to both volumes and with the dedication leaf to George III in volume one. The author served twenty years in India's Bengal region and records his hunting experiences through forty hand-coloured plates created by Samuel Howitt. Among the images are several describing pig-sticking adventures; shooting tigers from machans and elephant back; hunting buffalo; driving hogs, bears and wolves; and shooting peacocks and other game. The leather boards are scuffed and worn at the corners, edges and spine tips and has some surface scratches. The hinges solid. The text is good with some foxing and spotting to the pages and to the margins of some of the plates. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition slightly worn, gilt titles, gilt decoration. Joints good condition gently worn. Corners good condition repaired, worn and bumped. Boards good condition marks and scratches. Page edges good condition gilt.
