Finely bound in later polished calf gilt, spine richly gilt in compartments with titles to red and tan morocco lettering-pieces, raised bands, inner dentelles gilt, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Some repairs to both titles affecting a few letters, small hole in printed title not affecting letters, short marginal tear at foot of both titles, some dark spots and a few stains, some light staining and browning. Generally a very handsome copy. Engraved title-page, woodcut headpieces and historiated initials, and 48 engraved illustrations including one folding engraved plate of Persepolis and 5 maps, one of which is full page. Sir Thomas Herbert (1606-1682), courtier to Charles I, traveller and author, made an extensive tour in Persia, Cape of Good Hope, Madagascar, Surat, and coasted the Eastern shores of North America on his return to England from a diplomatic mission headed by Sir Dodmore Cotton in 1926. First published in 1634, this work is one of the best records of 17th-century travel, including remarkable illustrations of Persepolis, cuneiform inscriptions, and the dodo.
