American naturalist Charles Stedman Newhall (1842-1935) had a winding path toward becoming an esteemed naturalist of his era; after serving as a Union soldier in the Civil War, Newhall studied theology and entered the ministry, becoming a college professor on the subject, and after 25 years in the pastoral profession, became interested in forestry, accepted a position as an assistant special forest agent and eventually ascended to his position as Superintendent of Forest Reserves in California (Nelson's Encyclopaedia, 1907). Adding to the sense of history and the legacy of late 19th century nature study, this copy of The Trees of Northeastern America bears the bookplate of naturalist, ornithologist, and illustrator F. Schuyler Matthews (1854-1938), with occasional pencilled notes to pages and five dried leaf specimens. Wander the vast woods and wildernesses of turn of the century America by leafing through this complete set of Newhall's Northeastern America, illustrated in over three hundred figures altogether.
