Armer, Laura Adams
Waterless Mountain
Longmans, Green and Co., New York and Toronto, 1931. Stated first edition. Quarto full crimson crushed morocco. Spine with raised bands and simply lettered in gilt. Gilt-decorated turn-ins. Illustrated with color pictorial endpapers and 16 full-page b/w plates by Sidney and Laura Adams Armer. Front panel of the dust jacket bound in. This is THE AUTHOR?S OWN COPY with her bookplate on the front pastedown. Given the deluxe binding, this is likely a gift from her publisher, perhaps on the occasion of the awarding of the 1932 Newbery Medal to this title. Laid in are two important letters. The first is a TLS from Armer, submitting the original manuscript to the publisher. Interestingly, she states, ?In the case the book is published, I should like to have the foreword written by Oliver La Farge, author of ?Laughing Boy?. He is a friend of mine and loves the Navajo country as I do.? The publisher complied, and the foreword is indeed written by La Farge. The second letter is a charming ALS from Rachel Field (?and Hitty?) congratulating Armer on winning the Newbery. A fine copy of a unique and important book. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
Bookseller: The Literary Lion, ABAA [Thousand Oaks, CA, U.S.A.]
