Francis Herbert
William Cullen Bryant 1828
New York: 1828/1829 First Edition. The Talisman: For MDCCCXXIX (1829). NY: Elam Bliss, MDCCCXXVIII (1828). "In 1827 and the two following years, I was associated with Mr. Gulian C. Verplanck and Mr. Robert C. Sands in an annual publication called the Talisman, consisting of miscellanies, written almost exclusively by us three." From The Letters of William Cullen Bryant, March 5, 1869. First Edition. The only other available copy that I could find is in the Harvard Library. Preface is by Francis Herbert which is a joint pseudonym for William Cullen Bryant, Robert Charles Sands, and Gulian C. Verplanck. Hardcover with gilt design and lettering, gilt text blocks. Marble endpapers, frontispiece, table of contents, list of embellishments, 342 pages. Hardcover has wear & tear. First front end paper has previous owner's name stamp as well as an inscription in pencil. Pages have tanning/foxing from age as well as creases, small tears, soil spots. Some of the illustrations have tissue paper, others do not. Binding seems somewhat tight, as such, I did not want to open the pages too much/all the way for fear of cracking the spine/binding. It is an old book and should be handled gently. Small, 3 3/4" x 5 3/4". Please note that I have described the book as best as I can. Look at photos closely for condition and details as they are part of the description. If you have a question about the book, please ask. [Attributes: First Edition]
