[Photo Album]: Victorian Photography of the Maryland Area
Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia: 1888. Hardcover. Two volumes. Oblong small quartos measuring 10.5" x 7". Both albums are half leather and brown cloth with "album of photographs" stamped in gilt on each of the front boards. Contains 73 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 3.5" x 4.5" and 4.5" x 7" with captions. Good only with worn edges and waviness with some spotting on the second album with near fine photographs. Two photo albums kept by Oakland, Maryland native Edward S. Buckley, Jr. between 1887 and 1889. The albums detail his family and their home with images depicting the family representing four generations posed on the porch of their cottage as well as places they visited outside of Maryland. One photo shows the view "from the back porch of Oakland Cottage in September of 1888" which features a little patch of crops growing in the yard and an expanse of land beyond it. There are also portraits taken of family and friends posed around the cottage throughout the album which imply Buckley was an amateur photographer and enthusiast. One such photo shows a woman in a corseted dark dress standing on the porch of the cottage looking demurely at the camera, another shows a man in a suit with a hat and cane looking off into the distance. The natural beauty of the area is seen through the photos including one of the Youghiogheny River as seen from "County Bridge, Oakland."
