1857 1st Edition Rare Austin Steward Slavery Biography Africana Abolition
1857. "Twenty-Two Years a Slave, and Forty Years a Freeman" by Austin Steward. First edition. Published by William Alling, Rochester, 1857. Measures approximately 7.5" x 5", 360 pages. The book is in good condition. Spine cloth was detached and torn in several areas, now professionally reattached. Moisture damage visible on frontispiece and title page, but not visible elsewhere. Moderate foxing throughout the textblock. Very interesting inscription on the front endpaper from Joseph B. Bloss, the son of William Clough Boss - a great abolitionist and social reformer from Rochester, New York. The inscription reads "Lost my copy which was my father's and bought this July 9/16 at [H C Edwards]. I remember Austin Steward having been here often as a boy." Thus, somewhat of an association copy with the author. Joseph Bloss was noteworthy in his own right, as he recalled a time when he was helping a fugitive slave from his house to Frederick Douglass.
