[Photo Album]: North Farm Hackney Ponies
New York: circa 1930s - 1940s. Very Good. Hardcover. Oblong folio measuring 14" x 11". Black leather with "North Farm" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 33 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 6.5" x 9.5" and 8" x 10" with very few captions. Very good album with worn edges and slight staining on the page edges with near fine photographs. A collection of professional photographs of show ponies at events in the late 1930s and early 1940s with the stamps of photographers Haas, Freudy Photos, and Carl Klein, all based in New York, on the versos. The ponies were from North Farm owned by L.M. Passano, Jr. who bred dogs and Hackney ponies on the farm. Hackney ponies and horses were a breed originally used to pull carriages in England but later established as premier horses for shows and breeding. They are judged on traits such as "fine, slim, well-proportioned body; long, arched neck; set tail; animated and exaggerated motion." The ponies are seen here pulling carts and prancing in front of onlookers and judges. Although the names of the riders are not captioned it is probable the man seen in many of the photos is Passano and the woman seen here is his wife. Mrs. Passano is seen riding the ponies as well as posing with them in the winner's circle with trophies. One photo shows her pulled by two ponies at the Kansas City Horse Show. One of the ponies included here is Cassili's Mighty Mite born in 1911 and a star Hackney pony, later used to sire a line of award winning show ponies.
