Dubus, who died in 1999, is widely considered (to quote Ann Beattie in her introduction to a recent reissue of Dubus's work) "one of the best American short-story writers ever." Dubus's stories, Beattie writes, "question the status-quo. Actually, they catch it and break its neck, even those times they ostensibly put it back together. Everything looks the same, but if you were to lift it, you'd feel the inherent flaw." Nina MacLaughlin, writing in the Paris Review, writes that the reissue of Dubus's stories, "reaffirm Dubus's status as a master, as an unparalleled excavator of the heart and its pains, its [Thumbnails Below] Separate Flights [Proof and First Editions] Author: Dubus, Andre Publication: Boston: David R. Binding: Hardcover Condition: The proof has the publication date (June 1975), the date of the proof (2/27/75), and the price ($8.95) handwritten on the cover. The publisher's name and address is tipped onto the front cover; the title page is typed on a separate sheet and laid into the proof. The fact that the title page is typed suggests a very small distribution for the proof. The proof is generally very good. Both books are near fine in like jackets.
