Printed for D. Browne, R. Hett, et al, 1744. Condition: Very Good. Being a Philosophical, Historical and Critical Correspondence by Letters Which lately passed between certain Jews in Turkey, Italy, France, Etc. Second edition after the first of 1739. "Translated from the original into French by Marquise d'Argens and now done into English." These letters first appeared in 1736 in Denmark as weekly pamphlets. The next year the first forty letters were published in book form and were immediately popular in France and by 1739 they were in English. All five volumes in matching contemporary leather with hubs and text on the spines. 6 1/2" x 4 1/4". Former owners names are present ... text blocks are in nice condition. Volume one has a double frontispiece. The left hand page is "John Baptist de B..., / Marquise d'.../ Born the 24 of June 1704." The right hand frontispiece features many characters, the central of which is Don Quixote. Minor professional repair to the hinges.
