Contains the folding plate opposite page 117. Half title present. ix, [i], 502 pages. 32 page publisher's catalogue "Mr Murray's General List of Works" dated June, 1859 at rear. Original green cloth gilt, tooled in blind. Boards slightly marked, spine very slightly dulled and lower board very lightly sunned. Ex-reference library with Bookplate and two first edition points under bookplate to front pastedown. Remains of green plate to front free endpaper. Original brown endpaper placed before half-title. Small neat ink ownership signature dated 1860 to top margin of half title. Small light round stamps to pastedown, reverse of title and to bottom of last page of contents which is the last page of the index. Front hinge re-inforced extremely professionally and the repair is virtually invisible when viewing the outside of the volume. There is a small green cloth insertion to top of upper hinge. Uncut edges of pages are browned. Occasional browning to margins otherwise a clean and sound copy of one of the most important scientific works ever produced.
