MARIA SIBYLLA MERIAN 1647-1717 Insects.- Merian (Maria Sibylla) Erucarum Ortus, Alimentum et Paradoxa Metamorphosis, 3 parts in 1, First Latin edition, Amsterdam, Joannes Oosterwyk, 1718. Maria Sibylla Merian, was an incredibly talented artist and naturalist of the 17th. and early 18th. century, and definitely not typical of her time, she was a remarkably self-reliant woman of diverse talents, in 1699 she embarked with her daughter Dorothea on a dangerous voyage to the Dutch colony of Surinam to study exotic butterflies and their development from egg to caterpillar and pupa to imago - a biological phenomenon largely unknown in her time. The mother of two daughters and separated from her husband since 1685, Maria was forced to make her own way in business, which she did by teaching women to draw and paint, also dealing in paints as well as butterfly and reptile specimens (which she had preserved herself) and publishing her own books on flowers and caterpillars, she truly was a remarkable women for her time. This book is the last she wrote it was published posthumously, her daughter Dorothea Maria delivered it to the printer and publisher Joannes Oosterwyk, shortly after her mother's death on January 13th. 1717.
