The extensive Index to Appendix at front is divided into the various U.S. Navy squadrons and their operations in this year of the Civil War, with detailed reportage from named contributors throughout. With two folding plates: 'Passage of the Fleet of Gunboats Over the Falls at Alexandria, Louisiana, May 1864' approx. 10 3/4" x 22" size; splitting & some browning along old fold line nearest the text. (And) a 10" x 13" positional sea-battle chart of the action between the Confederate ship Alabama and the U.S.S. Kearsarge off the coast of France; the text with extensive reportage of the events, including from several foreign sources; closed tear at attachment, no loss to image or text. The duel at sea between Kearsarge and Alabama is commemorated by the U.S. Navy with a battle star on the Civil War campaign streamer; 17 of Kearsarge's crew received the Medal of Honor for valor during this action. The U.S. Navy gunboat Itasca was a wooden screw steamer launched by Hillman & Streaker at Philadelphia 1 October 1861; and commissioned there 28 November 1861, Lt. C. H. B. Caldwell in command.
