E.H. Shepard original illustration art, Winnie the Pooh first edition artist
1879. Winnie-the-Pooh fans take note: this is a original drawing from Pooh's illustrator E.H. Shepard (British, 1879-1976) that won't last long! This small, vibrant ink & watercolor spot illustration channels some of Shepard's style and line work from Pooh, especially in the face of the Cherub (there is a noticeable bit of Piglet in there). Meticulously drawn and unmistakably Shepard! He began work at PUNCH in 1921 and overlapped with his work on Pooh in 1926 (written by his frequent collaborator, author A. A. Milne), it is conceivable this was done during that time period. Shepard's ink drawings have always been more desirable and difficult to find than his pencil drawings. But, his watercolor original art is even harder to track down. The work has minor toning to it, but otherwise in very good condition for the age. For exhibition in 2006, it was professionally framed under UV glass and matted with a hand embellished mat. Terrific provenance as this work was exhibited in 2006 at the venerable Fine Art Society (New Bond St, London) as #363 in the exhibition "Drawings and Illustrations by Ernest Howard Shepard 1879-1976" co-curated by Sally Hunter Fine Art. There was a catalogue published to accompany the exhibition. The original gallery label is still affixed to the back of the frame. Open to reasonable offers and shipping in the US is included.
