Woodcut vignette to title page, head-pieces, and decorative initials. Illustrated throughout with woodcuts of military formations. Later vellum gilt by Riviere, with Christie Miller monogram on covers (and Britwell Court stamp on verso of title). Armorial bookplates of Charles Lilburn and Fremantle. Neat contemporary owner's name in ink at top of title page ('Johannes Alohoarn' [?]. Small 4to (18cm x 13.2cm). Very Good condition. Vellum lightly marked. Lacks folding plate. Top edge of leaves quite tightly trimmed, affecting page numbering in some places, and caption at top of F3. Pale stain to top outer corner of about half of the leaves. Please ask if you require a more detailed condition report, or view gallery images. A rare example of this military work by Edward Cooke, who served with the Middlesex Company in the 1620s. David Lawrence considers Cooke's treatises to be "representative of the worst that English military writers had to offer" (The complete soldier, 2009, p. 216).
