Marten Schagen, Amsterdam, 1724. Second edition. French. Large Quarto (22 x 29 cm). Two parts in one volume. 310;198 pp., with tables and illustrated throughout with half-page etchings, including two full page frontispieces. In contemporary full calf with gilt tooling to the board edges, raised bands with six gilt compartments and gilt title on a morocco label, and contemporary marbled endpapers. Old ownership notation on top and bottom of the page edges, moderate wear to board edges and corners, and to the front outer joint only near the spine ends; the morocco spine label is faded, and the front board is bowed; else fine. Each part has a full-page engraved frontispiece, title pages printed in red and black with engraved vignettes; and there are a total of 367 half-page engravings illustrating the text (151 after the artist Jan Luiken). David Martin, a French Protestant, authored and designed this work as a "print bible," with the text serving as a running commentary to the numerous illustrations. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
