SARL ABRAXAS-LIBRIS, 1890. Condition: Good. ORIGINAL EDITION - RARE JAPANESE BINDING. WITH WATERCOLOR DRAWING. Paris, Calmann Lévy, 1890. In-12 (12.5 x 19 cm), IV-358 pages, bradel binding covered with two Japanese leather papers butted on the back, first edition of Pierre Loti's beautiful book on Morocco, copy of the current edition (no large paper ) which was published after "Madame Chrysanthème" and "Japoneries d'automne". Remarkable Japanese-style binding by Paul Vié made up of two different leather papers joined to the back of the book and each presenting, around a decoration of geometric patterns, two landscapes. This iconography with landscapes is, to our knowledge, extremely rare. Most Japanese leather papers present either purely decorative elements, objects, animals or plant motifs. The addition of a Japanese aesthetic to a work about Morocco might seem incongruous, which it is not because there is in particular a reminder of Pierre Loti's attraction for Japan. The latter stayed five years before in the land of the Rising Sun, where he married a young Japanese woman. Two Romans followed, "Madame Chrysanthème" and "Japoneries d'automne", both published just before "Au Maroc". In addition, this copy undoubtedly belonged to Madeleine Burty, the daughter of the art critic Philippe Burty, whose role we know played in the dissemination of Japonism. Madeleine Burty was the wife of the earthenware maker Charles de Haviland. The copy is enriched with a watercolor drawing of the decorative structure of a Moroccan slipper with a detailed indication of the colors.
