MILL, John Stuart.
Gedachten over vrijheid.
Groningen: J. B. Wolters,, 1859. On Liberty in Dutch, published the same year as the original English Octavo (187 x 117 mm). Later black half cloth, hand written paper spine label, marbled boards, buff endpapers. Bookplate of Dutch jurist Pieter Adam van Holthe tot Echten (1807-1883) to front free endpaper. Head of spine chipped, very minor spot of wear to lower edge of front board, hinge gently cracked before title leaf but firm, contents browned and lightly foxed, else a very good copy. First edition in Dutch, rare. OCLC records just two copies in institutions outside the Netherlands: one at the British Library and one at the Vlaamse Erfgoedbibliotheek in Beglium; there are eight listed as located in the Netherlands. First published in English earlier the same year, On Liberty, "perhaps more than any other of his works, has been viewed by posterity as the kernel of his social philosophy" (ODNB). "Many of Mill's ideas are now the commonplaces of democracy. His arguments for freedom of every kind of thought and speech have never been improved on. He was the first to recognize the tendency of a democratically elected majority to tyrannize over a minority" (PMM). See Printing and the Mind of Man 345 (first edition in English). [Attributes: First Edition]
Bookseller: Peter Harrington [United Kingdom]
