1897. You are bidding on The Sign of the Four / A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, published in 1897 by Lovell & Coryell, New York. 8vo, 253 , 213 p., bound in original red cloth stamped in black. Second US hardcover publication of A Study in Scarlet after the Lippincott edition of 1891. Lovell and Coryell was a British publishing firm based out of New York, founded by John Lovell and Vincent Coryell. Between 1892 -1897 the firm published six novel and 12 short stories by Doyle. According to the Arthur Conan Doyle Encyclopedia, this title was published between 1892-1893. The firm eventually went bankrupt and in 1897 was taken over by the American Publishers Corporation. All of the Doyle books published by Lovell and Croyell are scarce. The Lippincott publication is scarce but does appear on the market from time to time and sells in the range of $4000 - $6000. OCLC lists 10 copies of the 1891 Lippincott edition, and 11 of this Lovell edition), likely due to its small print run. Described by Green and Gibson as a 'cheap and unauthorized American edition'. This is a nice copy. There is some spotting and mottling to lower spine cloth and top edge front board; top corner of front board gently bumped; top page ends lightly soiled; some light spotting to page ends and internally, with faint scent of perfume to text block; minor fraying to spine tips, book very slightly cocked, lower corners of first few pages dog eared, small spot of discoloration to p 211/212 of A Study In Scarlet (see photo) but a nice copy overall of a genuinely rare Doyle / Holmes book.
