Francis Welsh, Chicago, "(t)his book contains over 675 clear and accurate directions for mixing all kinds of popular and fancy drinks, served in the best hotels, clubs, buffets, bars and homes. Added to this there is a splendid introduction on wines, their medicinal value, when and how to serve them, kinds and styles of glasses to use and other valuable information and facts of great importance to every user of wines and liquors." Mr. Straub was born in Switzerland, emigrated to the United States and became wine steward at the Blackstone Hotel, Chicago, until his death in 1920 (coincidentally when Prohibition started). He was, remarkably, a teetotaler. Primarily a book of cocktails, there is a section in the back on vintage wines and the uses of various glasses. The medicinal use of wines should be taken with a grain of salt! Hardcover in light blue-green colored boards, 159 pages, with a few black and white illustrations and several advertisements. Measures 4.5 X 6.4 inches. Good condition. Sun is a little sunned and there are a couple of tiny stains on the front board. There's an owner's inscription (and a few stray ink marks) on the front endpaper. Pencil checkmarks were erased from several pages -- should now be unmarked inside. Complete, securely bound.
