Louis Rousselet
India and its Native Princes by Louis Rousselet J.S. Virtue & Co Limited 1875
London: India and its Native Princes by Louis Rousselet J.S. Virtue & Co Limited 1875 The book was written by Louis-Théophile Marie Rousselet (1845-1929), a French traveller, writer and photographer, and first published by Hachette in 1875. This English edition was revised and edited by Lieut.-Col Buckle and published and printed by J.S. Virtue & Co., Limited and Virtue & Co., Limited. The large quarto contains 317 black and white wood-engraved plates and text illustrations, 3 coloured lithographed and 3 black and white maps. It also comprises a half-title page, frontispiece, title and dedication pages in black and red, preface, contents, vocabulary of Indian terms, lists of illustrations, full-page engravings and maps, and features decorative initials at the beginning of each chapter. An original red pebble-grained cloth is adorned on the front board and spine with blocked ornate decoration tooled in gilt and embossed with red and black design. Central and spine cartouches are inscribed with an exotic lettering in gold and black and surrounded by gilt sprigs of stylised flowers, leaves and wavy stems, pointillé dots and octagonal raised arabesques with filigree scrolls. Elegant dentelle and fillet borders complete a harmonious composition. A back board is framed with embossed floral and plain fillets. This richly decorated binding is reminiscent of Indian traditional patterns and calligraphy. I believe that the India and its Native Princes published by J.S. Virtue & Co Limited is a rare first English edition with a very short noncommercial print run dating back to 1875. Co … [Click Below for Full Description]
