1888. Fine condition. WESSEX TALES by THOMAS HARDY With a map of Wessex Published in 1907 by Macmillan The first year of the Pocket Edition ~~~~~~~~~~~ Inscribed by Thomas Hardy to Sir Charles Darling 'eminent London Judge' with his full signature. While Hardy was himself a Magistrate, for more serious cases a London judge would be sent. On this occasion, as recorded in Hardy's 'Life' he attended Dorchester assizes as a guest of Sir Charles in October 1918, to view a case of Piracy. This is likely the time when Hardy presented the inscribed copy, but the two were acquainted long before this. Small format, red cloth. Top edge gilt Map of Wessex 1907 First Ed thus ========= Rubbed extremities, vertical crease front cover, top corner creased. Contents excellent, no foxing, inscribed front end paper, and presented in a matching card clamshell case. A scarce item as Hardy signed very little with the exception of limited editions.
