Das Lorscher Evangeliar
1866. Magnificent facsimile of the Evangéliaire de Lorsch, preserved in 4 different sites: the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana (Pal.lat.50), the Biblioteca Documentara Batthyaneum (Alba Julia), at the Victoria & Albert Museul in London (Inv; Nr. 138-1866) and at the Vatican Museo Sacro. Its creation dates back to around 810, during the reign of Charlemagne and is said to have been produced by illuminators from the Carolingian court scriptorium. This illustrated manuscript, all of purple, gold and silver and whose dishes are made of ivory, was the most precious and best protected book of Lorsch Abbey. This facsimile, a sumptuous testimony of medieval art, has been published in only 333 copies, all including an ivory cover (the original has been fragmented for 500 years); this one is number 108. Its 437 pages (27 x 37 cm.), Include magnificent miniatures; all the ornamental pages as well as the canonical tables have been faithfully reproduced, as has the text, originally written in gold. The whole is preserved in a voluminous black leather case (36 x 46 cm.), With a piece of illustration on the cover and the golden title on the back and on the first cover. The commentary book written by Dr. Hermann Schefers is 279 pages, text in German. Superb copy.
