New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1934. - Octavo, 7-3/4 inches high by 5-1/4 inches wide. Black cloth titled in silver on the front cover and the spine, with the outline of a face pictured in green on the front cover, in a modern facsimile of the pictorial dust wrapper identified thus on the inner flap. The covers are rubbed and bumped with light wear to the corners. There are creases along the book's spine. viii & 292 pages. The blurb from the original dust wrapper is pasted to the front pastedown above an early bookseller's label. A very few page corners are creased. Good. First edition, first printing, in a facsimile dust wrapper. As per a book review published in the New York Times on Sunday October 21, 1934: "The mystery in which the Darneil family is involved is one for the solution of which ordinary police methods would be useless. At any rate that is how it appears to Jerningham, the dramatist, who is a friend of the family. It appears to be certain that Gordon Darneil has died by his own hand because of some dreadful secret which he is unwilling to face. Then two other members of the family die, and in both cases there are witnesses who have not the slightest doubt that death was self-inflicted." Jerningham is "willing to go to any lengths" to save the surviving daughter and seeks to convince her that her father was murdered and a letter he left behind revealing that the family has "negro blood" is a forgery.
