Alexandre Dumas [père] (1894) 'The Three Musketeers', UK illustrated limited edition, published by George Routledge and Sons in two oversize volumes. One of only 750 numbered copies of which this is no. 686, with 250 illustrations by Maurice Leloir, translated by William Robson. Together with the two books comes an original handwritten and signed letter by Alexandre Dumas père (see below). Condition of the books: very good condition of both volumes. Quarter-bound leather with leather corner tips. Bound by Bayntun-Riviere in Bath, England. We have seen the books bound in different styles and cannot determine whether this is indeed the original binding. However, it is an old binding and a beautiful binding choice. Top page block is gilded. Some rubbing to the spine as shown. Internally very clean without any previous owner's scribbles, no bookplates, no stamps. Seminal illustrations by Maurice Leloir. This edition has spawned various facsimile editions of which the most recent one is the Easton Press limited edition. The original letter: addressed to Madame Porcher, in French. Dumas sends a message requesting some money and stating `My dear Madame Porcher, Can you please send me 70 francs, an amount which I will return to you on Friday - This small amount is for me and is separate from my accounts. Do not register this. Thousand thanks. [signature]. With blank addressee leaf in Dumas´ hand. Small overall creasing and folds, near fine. Madame Porcher was the wife of Jean Baptiste Porcher (1792-1864), a French former theatre employee who created an agency which used to buy copy … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]
