Poems From the Inner Life ~1864 ~ Lizzie Doten ~ Spiritualism ~ Edgar Allan Poe
1864. Silence is vocal, if we listen well. Here we offer a very rare first edition of the classic Spiritualist poetry collection, Poems From the Inner Life, by Lizzie Doten... or, one may say, by William Shakespeare and Edgar Allan Poe, and Robert Burns, among others. In the midst of the US Civil War, the religion of Spiritualism was flourishing, and all over the country, spiritualists were seeking out avenues to communicate with their loved ones recently deceased from cholera epidemics or the war. It was at this moment Lizzie Doten, who had been communicating with the other world since her childhood, offered this collection of new work from these deceased literary greats to the public through the Boston publishing company, William White & Company. Prominent among these offerings is "The Streets of Baltimore," through which Edgar Allan Poe reveals the tortures and terrors of the night in which he died. Boards are worn at edges and stained in the rear (please see pics). Endpapers are still intact. Period pen-and-ink inscriptions on flyleaf and verso of title page. Minor foxing. Binding is very tight and square; text and illustrations are very clean, bright, and crisp. 171 pages, measures approximately 7.75 x 5.25-inches. This scarce, remarkable Spiritualist collectible will make a wonderful addition to your collection or a very special gift. ** Have you seen all the amazing first and rare editions of iconic books we offer?
