Narritive of the author's second journey under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution through Mongolia and Tibet, which he has described in diary form. Rockhill started from Peking and traveled northwards to Hwang-ho (Yellow River) via Kalgan, from there to Lan-cho (Lanzhou) Sining-fu, Kumbum Monastery, Tsaidam, Changtang, the Tangla Range, Chamdo, and Batang. Text is clean, tight and unmarked. Marbled endpapers and page edges. Large folding map bound in after text, map has a short closed tear next to binding.Three quarter -bound in red leather and marbled paper with some edgewear to the paper portions. Spine corded with gold-stamped title. This handsome binding may be a contemporary re-binding. Signed by Rockhill on title page. Signed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover.
