1887. A Year Amongst the Persians Impressions as to the Life, Character and Thought of the People of Persia, Received During Twelve Months' Residence in that Country in the Years 1887-88 Edward G. Browne 1893 First Edition A very good collectible copy in the original blue cloth binding stamped with the title in gilt on the cover and spine. Small bump to the lower right corner. Light rubbing to the spine ends and corners. The folding map which shows some wear and mending is present and firmly attached. The hinges are nice and tight and the pages are clean. Filled with Baha'i references throughout. Quite uncommon is such nice condition. Browne published in areas which few other Western scholars had explored. Many of his works are related to Iran, either in the fields of history or Persian literature. He is perhaps best known for his documentation and historical narratives of the Babi / Baha'i faith. Browne was the only Westerner to meet Baha'u'llah. As a youth, Browne had read reports about the Bab written by a European visitor in Persia. He had become so attracted by the story of the Bab's faith that he eventually dedicated himself to learning all that he could about the new religion. In 1888 he journeyed to Persia and met with many of the Baha'is, including some individuals who had known the Bab personally. In 1890 he set out for Ottoman territory to meet Baha'u'llah. In his journal, parts of which were later published, Browne commented on the remarkable atmosphere of spirituality that pervaded Bahji.
