She mostly photographed people in their environment, often close up and in spontaneous looking situations but with subjects clearly performing for her camera. Many of her subjects were known to her or she entered their worlds by crossing social barriers that would have intimidated most middle class girls of her day. This is the photographer's first and only book. It is a compendium of 131 portraits of women dating from 1968 to 1974. Carol Jerrems flexed her lens on women from all walks of life including women liberationists, Aboriginal spokeswomen, activists, revolutionaries, teachers, students, drop-outs. Preoccupied by subcultures or marginal groups, she found ways to infiltrate these communities and to capture pockets of life previously ignored.
