Baker, Valentine
Clouds In The East: Travel And Adventure On The Perso- Turkoman Frontier. - in the original cloth.
Chatto And Windus, London, 1876. 8vo. Second revised edition bound in the original green cloth. The cloth is rather rebbed and the backstrip creased and worn at head and foot. The frontispiece has ben bound in the wrong way round and there are closed tears in two of the three folding maps. x, (2), 376pp. + publisher's catalogue of 36pp. Complete with 8 chromolithograph plates, 2 text illustrations and 3 coloured folding maps. This is an account of a major military and scientific survey of the virtually unknown region along the Russo-Persian border between the Caspian and the town of Sarakhs. The English belief at that time was that the invasion of India by Russia would be over the mountains of the Hindu Kush. Baker was alone in realising that the greatest danger lay in a possible advance through the easier terrain up the River Atrak, along the Akhal oasis and thence to Herat and India. Baker was first-rate military strategist and as the Russian General Skobeleff remarked: " You have one good general in your army. He is Valentine Baker. " [Attributes: Hard Cover]
