John Updike
FIRST PICTURE BOOK Steichen photos, afterword by John Updike (1991) 1 of 25 RARE
Published by the Library Fellows of the Whitney Museum (New York, 1991). The full title is The First Picture Book Everyday Things for Babies. Hardcover, bound in full dark blue leather, with marbled endpapers. The book includes 24 offset Steichen lithographs and a Steichen photogravure, the 1930 preface by Mary Steichen Calderone, and a 10-page Afterword by Updike that is new in this edition. One of only 25 copies in full leather, with a separate colophon card attesting to that fact, signed by Updike and Steichen Calderone. A limited edition reissue of the 1930 classic. Light blue cloth folding box, with two separate photogravures in folders laid in. (There was also a 250-copy issue with cloth sides and leather back that was issued in a slipcase with one separate photogravure in a folder.) Unread. No flaws. Brand new. Reportedly, this issue was fully subscribed on publication. Copies very rarely come to market. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
